6 weeks

Is just about how long it has been since my surgery. 6 weeks on April 1. And that is the day when I have to go back to work. Ironic? Will see.

The time has gone by fast and I have truly enjoyed this time spent at home recovering from surgery. I have been to doctors, physical therapy, learning to do things with my left hand, but it's all for a good purpose. My hand is sore, but it's from using it. Not from carpal tunnel. I have many exercises to do for my hand and to strengthen my hand as well. I still don't have full use of my hand but it is getting better. My pinkie finger, when bent, does not touch my hand, my strength is still weak but getting stronger, still hard to use scissors and to grip things. But I am working hard and it's getting better. But the ultimate test will come on Tuesday, when I am back at work.

I have used this time off to relax, sleep, heal and do many things for me. I made a list of my goals that I wanted to accomplish while I was on leave. Most of them I did get done and then some. No, I did not get to do everything I wanted to do, but I got enough done and mostly, like I said, time to relax and take care of me.

So what did I do, lets see: (no necessarily in this order) got my hair cut, nails done 3 times, had a facial and a massage (ahhhh!), wandered through the mall which included getting some new makeup at Mac, clothes at American Eagle, earrings at Brighton and a book, went to a movie, spent hours browsing through a book store, watched a lot of movies, read many books and a ton of magazines, watched tv during the day, spent time doing nothing, hung out with the kids, went to lunch a few times with friends, learned to use my left hand to do many things, slept a lot, took the dog on lots of walks, started running again, organized most of the house, kept the house clean, did tons of laundry, made new valances for the family room and kitchen, recovered some pillows for the couch, chased a lizard out of the house with the help of Evelyn and Greg, did some scrapbooking, made some neat projects, painted Greg's room, nailed bamboo fencing to Greg's walls (more details at a later date) got paint for Evelyn's room, and the list goes on. Whew! Time has gone by fast.

For tomorrow, Monday, my last day off, it's gonna be a busy one. I have physical therapy, a lot of phone calls to make, errands to do and then get Evy to riding lessons and dash to the baseball field for Greg's game. So tonight it's to bed early for a good nights sleep. Kids start school again after being off for 9 days, including the weekend. I know they are ready to get back to school and see friends.

I am in the process of downloading hundreds of pictures from the camera. This means lots of pictures to post. My therapist says she now wants me on the computer. Ok. I'll try my best. Did I mention she is great. If you need a hand therapist, let me know and I will pass on her info. I've been having fun there too and have met some great and interesting people. My favorite is Helen, this elderly woman who is constantly telling jokes. Reminds me of my grandma Evelyn.

Kids and Tom are settled in now watching America's Funniest Home Videos. I hear them laughing and don't want to miss out. Check back as I will try to post each day to catch up on what we did over Easter vacation, baseball, etc......

Riding lessons

Evelyn is taking riding lessons with Rivera Riders in Lake Forest. She loves it. Never wants to leave and pesters me almost every day for a horse.

Evelyn had a project in reading.......making a memory box. She wanted some pictures of her and Freckles. So this was the perfect photo op. I got photos of Evelyn getting Freckles ready to ride and then some of her riding Freckles.

When Greg is with me, he loves to walk around the stables petting horses. He has found his favorites who he has to visit every time. There is Slick, JJ, Skooter and of course, everyone's favorite, Sassy. I also have mine; Roy, Skooter, some other's who I don't know their names and of course Sassy.

These 2 horses are always at each other. JJ on the right and Skooter on the left. Greg stands in the middle of them. I didn't get it in a shot but JJ actually had hold of Greg's sweatshirt and Skooter was trying to get a piece of the action. Next time dude. He also loves the pen with the mini horse and all the goats.

There is also everyone's favorite, Sassy. She shares a stall with 2 very fat goats who continually try to get out and get your attention. Greg got to lead Sassy out of her stall and brush her this time. He did a good job too. I don't know all of Sassy's story. But , Sassy is blind. She has no eyes. She did at one time but in order to save her, her eyes had to be removed. I don't know what was wrong.

Her stall is next to the riding arena. We walk over to her, call her name, and she immediately comes up to us for a good scratch. She is so sweet and friendly. She's fun to watch in the arena when she rolls around in the dirt. So, we always talk to Sassy and give her some good ear scratching and tickling under her chin. She is a beauty!

Now here is Evelyn. She has to groom the horse before she can ride. She can now hoist the saddle on the horse and cinch it all up, and get up on on the horse ready for riding. Evelyn just adores Freckles and they work together very well.

In the arena, they start with a walk, and then a slow jog to warm up the horses. Then they start their patterns or different gaits. Today, was a circle pattern. Not too far out and not too close to the middle. Evelyn did it perfect walking and even jogging. My guess is that this is to use your legs to get the horse to do what you want it to do. Worked. Worked quite well.

After the pattern, it was time for a stable walk. Evelyn was the last, the caboose. At one point, Bosco (the horse in front of Freckles) tripped on something and startled, so Freckles startled. Evelyn didn't even seem phased. She held Freckles back and then took up her position again when all was well with Bosco.

I am just itching to get out there and ride too. I would love to take lessons. Rode a lot as a kid on my aunt's horse or my friends horse and where ever else I could. But never any lessons. No desire to be a barrel racer like Evelyn. Just wanted to ride for fun. Maybe one day. Hmmmm birthday present? A month of lessons? I'll put it on the "to do" list. One day. Maybe.

For now, I will enjoy watching Evelyn ride and sweet talking my favorite horses at the stables.

Not much going on

And I do say it's rather nice. I did call into a work conference call yesterday afternoon. It was short and I got to find out some of what has been going on while I have been out.

Still in PT and she sure works me hard. But I am seeing success. Today I was able to open the cap of my water bottle. I have not been able to do that with my right hand since the surgery! My scar runs right along the life line of my hand. Now I have a longer life!! It's red and nasty looking today as my therapist did ultrasound on it today. It does feel good - warm gel with the warm machine. But then I had to rub these sticks with different textures on them over the incision area to stimulate different touches. Didn't like that. A lot of exercises, a nice hand massage (oh I do love that) and finished up with ice. Don't like that but it does help. I go again tomorrow.

I still can not use scissors. I am trying to make a new valance before Easter and it's been so hard to cut. But now I can sew up the hems and get it hung (hopefully) before Easter. Doubt the pillow covers will get made though.

I have another doctor appointment on Thursday. Can't wait to see what the doc says about my progress. Wondering when I will be able to go back to work. Not that I am in any rush to.

After therapy, I generally just take it easy for the rest of the day as my hand is sore. Keep doing my exercises, but stay off the computer and don't do much else. So, I did a few errands and then watched a bunch of my recorded shows. Ellen was so funny when they showed the clip of her in the See's Candy factory. I was truly laughing!

Greg had a game tonight. They lost 1 - 2. But still a good game. Greg did not pitch today. They have a nice long break until practice next Wednesday. Their record is good for early on in the season. I will check the website after all the week day games are entered to see the standings. I think the Dodgers are in 2nd.

I have been falling into one of my old habits. Staying up too late. Ugh. And now I am tired and paying for it. I can not sleep in tomorrow, but sure will on Friday and Saturday. Kids are out of school until March 21. I am so excited that I get to be off work too while they are on Spring Break. We will plan some fun day trips. Will also brain storm the promised room make overs. Long over due. Don't think I can paint just yet, but at least we can get ideas.

No pictures yet. they are on the computer but I have so many baseball pix to go through. Also some great pix of Evy at riding lessons and Greg visiting some of his favorite horses at the stable. While Evy is riding, Greg and I walk around the stable petting horses. One of my favorites is this huge horse named Roy. He doesn't seem super friendly, but I sweet talk to him whenever I see him and actually got him to stick his head over his pen so I could scratch his ears. :) He didn't give me that go away look. And then there is always Sassy. We love her. Greg got to take her out and brush her the other day. He loved that. I'll tell her story later.

Good night now and make the most of the week :)

Dodgers update

Dodger's won today. 8 - 3. Super game. They played the Angels. Greg pitched innings. He got 3 hits today.
We have a great record early in the game. Let's keep it up Dodgers!!

Ok, so no pix yet as promised. I still need to download from my camera.

Hand. It's sore from exercising and use. Getting better though.

That's about it for now.

It's 9:30 am

and I am off to a great start this morning. Feeling good and rested from my long sleep last night. Although I did wake at 3 am, which is typical, pondered getting up, but quickly fell back asleep until Tom woke me at 6:20. Time to get up!

I got the kids to school, came home and walked the dog, went running, sent a fax to HR, got dinner all ready for tonight after the game, got the snacks together as we have snack tonight at the game, got all the baseball gear and riding gear ready to go, unloaded the dish washer, put the towels in the dryer, watered the side yard, tidied up the house, took a shower, read my emails (not necessarily in that order) and now it's time to dry my hair and get ready for physical therapy. Whew! I'm getting good at this now that I am starting to feel awake again and feeling like my pre-stressed out self again.

After physical therapy I know my hand will be extremely sore so it's no computer or much of anything for me for the rest of the day. I'm usually good with a few emails in the morning when my hand is rested from a good night's sleep. But still go slowly and mostly with one finger or left handed. Will watch a movie or read until it's time to get the kids from school. Then it's a dash to Evelyn's riding lessons and then to the baseball field for Greg's game. Hopefully the kids won't have much homework and they can get it done in the car.

Have a great Monday and great week.

Dodgers update

Game 3 was this morning. Perfect base ball weather. We lost today 0 - 3, but still had a great game. Greg pitched 2 innings and had some great strike outs. I didn't have to keep score as we were visitor. This means the home team keeps the master score book and the pitch count. Our other scorekeeper kept score for our team. This was good as my hand is very sore from intense PT yesterday. And I also got to take pictures. We also had the professional action photos taken today and can't wait to see those!

Tom and Evelyn are in Big Bear and I know they are having fun. Greg and Harrison are playing outside. I have most of the windows open letting the nice fresh breeze inside. I am so ready to get out and do some work in the yard but can't yet. Need my incision to completely heal and get my hand back in shape before I go digging. It's really sore today too, thus the slow, mostly left handed typing. But, I am getting ready for that.

I finished cleaning out the garage. Total Mission Organization of my home. Just have the dreaded office to finish , but is sure looks better than it does most of the time. For the rest of the day, relaxing and more reading.

Enjoy the pix. Ug. Maybe not. My camera and compter are not getting along at the moment. I have so many pix in the camera too! I'll let it sit blinking and maybe it will decide to transfer the pix sometime today.

Enjoy this wonderful weather.

I'm Back

Well, kind of. Limiting my time on the computer. And I am on the road to recovery. Stitches are out and the incision is healing. Still looks nasty, but better than it did last week. I have started physical therapy and have to work on getting my fingers to work again. It's tough and hurts.
Surgery went well. I was very groggy for a week from the pain meds. But I am over that now and only take Aleve when I feel the need to.
I am enjoying my time at home. Reading, watching a lot of movies (even the guy at Blockbuster commented on it!), sleeping, doing puzzles, cleaning out closets and heavy duty dusting, and getting back to being able to use my hand. Taking the dog on a long walk every morning and then taking myself on a long walk. It's nice to get out in the morning and walk!
Next dr. appointment is March 20 and I will get the word when I can go back to work. The more time off the better as I am totally under no stress at the moment and loving it!! Really loving it!
Almost my bed time. 8:00. Seriously. I have been sleeping 9 to 10 hours a night and it's great!
Baseball is back in full swing now. Greg pitched 2 innings at the first game and will pitch again this Saturday. The schedule is posted. I am keeping score again and AA is so much more intense than A. Have to keep balls and strikes and pitch count........ It takes 2 people and luckily another mom keeps score too. It's hard to do wearing my brace, especially when it's freezing cold outside. But I have managed and it will only get easier. It's been fun seeing everyone from last year and years past. We sure do have a great team this year.

I'll try to post some awesome baseball pictures this weekend. But I make no promises.

Evelyn is really advancing in her riding lessons. She has found a horse she really wants to buy. Yikes! Not ready for that yet. She has a new instructor and it's going great. I need to get some more pix of her. Evelyn almost got thrown when she was riding Freckles the other week. But she stayed on and it didn't even seem to phase her. Except for the big bruise she has on her arm from hitting it on the saddle horn! Now she loves riding Freckles and they work very well together. That's my cowgirl!!

Hope everyone is doing well. :) Miss you all.

It's time

Tommorrow is the big day. I'm as nervous as heck. It's hard to stay focused. But I made 2 pots of lentil soup this morning, worked for a few hours, got the kids off to their friends, dropped my lap top off in Orange, made a Target run, made some jello, and am folding clothes. Then I am done! Whew!

We are going to se The Spiderwick Chronicles today at 5. I love the books and can't wait to see the movie. I have even started reading the books as I have just read chapters here and there with the kids.

Tonight, watching the final episode of Prison Break and hopefully get a good nights sleept. Tomorrow morning I will take 2 showers as I don't know when I will get to take another good shower. Thanks for the tip Dad!! Then it's off to the surgery center and time for la-la land.

Thanks for your kind thoughts and prayers. Will touch base again in another week or so.

So much to do, so little time

That's how I feel just about now. Time is ticking away till Tuesday.

It's getting late and I feel like I have so much more to do. I just have to stop and take a breath.

This weekend is just going to fly by. Saturday Greg has a soccer game and then baseball practice. I am going to the Scrap Book Expo and working with Jessica in her class. Then I get to cruise the Expo. So many fun things to see and this time I can buy. Could not at CHA. Tom will be hanging out with the kids. Evelyn will just go along for the ride.

Sunday Greg has practice again. This team will be on fire come the first game! In the afternoon we are having Eric & Chrissy and the boys over as well as my mom and her brother Russ. Russ is here visiting for a few weeks and we have hardly seen him as we have been so busy. This will be a good time just to sit down and chat some more.

By Sunday afternoon my plan is to have the house totally clean and all the laundry done. I am almost there. Just have to finish dusting and vacuum. But you never know what can happen between now and then.

Monday no school. Whoo-hoo! But Evelyn has to work on some school work. Yep, I know, mean mom...... I have to drive to Orange to lock up my work lap top while I am out and then the rest of the day is ours. I just want to relax, maybe see a movie and enjoy the day before I become one handed for awhile. Oh, I also need to keep looking for that on line typing with your toes class. LOL! That's a joke we have going on here.

Have a fun and safe weekend everyone :)

CHA day 3

As promised, here are pictures from CHA. Lot's of pictures.
Day 3 was slower than the others as the show was starting to wind down. My make and take booth was not as busy as the previous days and this gave me time to browse around the other booths.
Once again my back pack was super heavy filled with all the magazines and catalogs I picked up wandering through the show. I was so exhausted on Tuesday, had not slept well the night before, and had a headache and sore throat. But I stuck it out and went anyways. I didn't want to miss a thing.
I sure hope I get a chance to do this again. Maybe Chicago in the Spring? Hmmmm. It's a thought. But for sure next February when it's back in Anaheim.
So, now for photos, and lots of them. My blog has not had many photos on it anyways. And they are not in any particular order.

Count down to S Day

I had my pre-op doctor appointment and everything is good to go. S Day is 2-19-08, 10 am, check in is 9 am. Back to the doctor on Friday the 22nd to have my hand checked out and find out what is in store for me for the recovery period. The first week I am not supposed to do anything. That's fine with me. I plan to nap, read and watch movies then nap some more. Time to de-stress as well.
With the help of Evelyn, we have a freezer packed (yes, there is no room in there) full of pre made meals. The fridge and panty are running a little low but I will take care of that this weekend. Laundry is just about done and house is half way cleaned. I'm making progress here.
Still working away and trying my best to have things in order for my very capable co-workers when I am out.
How do I feel? Nervous, anxious, relieved, scared.....so many emotions I can't describe them all. I left Tom a message when I was done with my appointment and he told me I sounded freaked out. Yep, I guess I probably was at that point as reality had really sunk in then. 4 days away.
I will be off the computer for quite sometime but will update when I can. I will have to practice typing with my toes (ha-ha) and my left hand. That'll be a hoot!
Last time I had surgery was when I had my wisdom teeth pulled out. Back then I had no other responsibilities, like taking care of a family. So, this will be interesting. I have already told the kids that they really have to step up here. I know I can count on Evelyn and Tom but just have to get the gears moving on Greg.
If anyone has any good movie recommendations, let me know. Blockbuster is just a mile away and will be a nice walk when I need to exhange movies. My Q is all lined up and ready to go with some of my favorite movies. Book shelf is packed with books that are calling out to me to be read.
Say a prayer or send good thoughts my way if you remember. Thanks :)
